Campus Planning defines the land use, urban design, open space, density, and circulation networks as a comprehensive and planned system. Develop planning and urban design guidelines, evaluate land use and siting decisions, establish parameters for campus development sites.

Position Summary

The Architect within Campus Planning at Virginia Tech plays a critical role in designing and planning the university’s physical spaces to ensure they meet the evolving needs of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This advanced individual contributor position requires a high level of expertise and experience in architectural design and campus planning. The Architect will independently lead the design of various campus buildings and public spaces, contributing to the university’s long-term development vision. The role involves designing functional and sustainable architectural solutions while considering aesthetic and environmental factors. The Architect will be responsible for creating architectural plans, design concepts, and technical specifications for campus facilities and outdoor spaces. They will also contribute to the development of campus planning guidelines, land-use strategies, and urban design principles, ensuring that designs align with the university's overarching goals and regulatory standards. As part of the campus planning team, the Architect will collaborate with university leadership, other planning professionals, and external consultants to ensure that each project meets functional requirements and reflects Virginia Tech's commitment to sustainability and innovation. This role also involves mentoring junior staff, offering technical guidance, and fostering a collaborative environment that supports professional growth within the team. Additionally, the Architect will evaluate and assess land-use decisions and siting options to align with broader campus development plans, ensuring that each project is in sync with the university’s long-term strategic vision. The Architect will be expected to work independently with minimal supervision, taking responsibility for managing projects from inception through to completion, and ensuring compliance with building codes and sustainability standards. This position is central to ensuring that campus facilities and spaces are designed to foster a productive, engaging, and sustainable environment for all university stakeholders.
