General Supervisor, Space Planning

Space Planning
Space Planning provides space management services to ensure space assignments are aligned with user needs. Work with occupants to understand and articulate their business program, activities, space needs, and functional requirements. Space planning and analysis can include fit studies, occupancy and utilization reviews, and identification of options to optimize the use of certain types of spaces or locations.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The General Supervisor within Space Planning at Virginia Tech is responsible for supervising a team of experienced administrative, technical, and operational staff in the space planning department. The supervisor plays a key role in coordinating the schedules, workflow, and day-to-day activities of the team to ensure that all space planning tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. This position ensures that space assignments and utilization align with the needs of various university units, working closely with stakeholders to understand and address their space requirements. The supervisor will oversee the training and orientation of new employees, ensuring that the team has the necessary resources and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities. They will also monitor the progress of ongoing projects, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and within budget. The General Supervisor is accountable for maintaining high standards of performance and productivity within the team, addressing any challenges or issues that arise during the course of work. They will assist in the implementation of space planning strategies, including occupancy and utilization reviews, fit studies, and optimization of space usage, contributing to the overall success of campus operations. Additionally, the General Supervisor is responsible for fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment, guiding the team toward achieving both short-term objectives and long-term goals. This role involves providing regular feedback, conducting performance evaluations, and helping to cultivate the professional development of team members. The General Supervisor ensures that all tasks align with the broader goals of Campus Operations and Campus Planning, helping to create a physical environment that supports the university's mission and vision.
