General Director, Space Planning

Space Planning
Space Planning provides space management services to ensure space assignments are aligned with user needs. Work with occupants to understand and articulate their business program, activities, space needs, and functional requirements. Space planning and analysis can include fit studies, occupancy and utilization reviews, and identification of options to optimize the use of certain types of spaces or locations.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The General Director within Space Planning at Virginia Tech is responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of the space planning function, ensuring that the university's space management services align with its strategic goals. The director plays a central role in developing and executing strategies that optimize the use of physical spaces across campus, including overseeing space assignments, fit studies, and occupancy reviews. This position requires strong leadership and management skills to guide a team of professionals and coordinate resources effectively to meet the needs of campus stakeholders. The General Director will ensure that space planning services meet the functional and programmatic requirements of various university units, ensuring that spaces are utilized efficiently and support the overall mission of the university. The General Director will have primary responsibility for staffing, budgeting, and long-term planning for the space planning department, ensuring that all objectives are met within the allocated resources. This role requires collaboration with senior leadership to establish and align space planning goals with broader campus planning and operational strategies. The director will oversee the assessment of current and future space needs and ensure that campus space planning activities are responsive to the evolving needs of the university community. The General Director will also provide guidance and direction for the team, fostering a high-performance culture and promoting professional development opportunities for staff. In addition to their internal responsibilities, the General Director will serve as a key point of contact for university leadership, providing insights on space utilization trends and recommending strategic solutions to optimize space across the institution. The position has significant university-wide impact, as decisions made in this role affect the physical environment of the entire campus. The General Director will ensure that all space planning activities support the university's mission, contribute to a conducive learning and working environment, and help shape the university's growth and development for years to come.
