Sustainability plans, develops, implements, and maintains sustainability programs and projects, which enable the organization to balance economic, environmental, and social considerations across broad time horizons, physical spaces, and populations. Types of projects include energy use reduction, energy cost savings, waste management, recycling, building improvements and enhancements.
Executive
Executive: The positions work is achieved through the strategic direction of the organization as a whole. Executives have direct accountability for setting strategic goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of a senior management area or other business unit with a universitywide scope of impact. These positions contribute to the highest-level panels and teams. The decisions made under the purview of the executive positions duties must routinely have direct impact on success across the university and impact the overall development of the university. Executive positions are reflected in the E1-E3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Associate Executive: Accountable for annual execution of goals and objectives in area of responsibility; disseminates goals to direct reports and ensures goals are operationalized. Recommends and may approve policy for area of operational and/or functional control. Typically has multiple directors and managers as direct reports. Scope of responsibility is a university wide sub-function with multiple disciplines, or multiple functions within a college or business unit.

Position Summary

The Associate General Executive for Sustainability at Virginia Tech will provide leadership and strategic direction in the planning, development, and implementation of the university's sustainability programs and initiatives. This executive role is responsible for ensuring that sustainability is integrated into all aspects of campus operations, fostering an environment that balances economic, environmental, and social considerations across the university. The position will oversee projects such as energy use reduction, energy cost savings, waste management, recycling programs, and sustainability-focused building improvements, ensuring they align with the university's broader goals of sustainability and resource stewardship. As a key leader within Campus Operations, the Associate General Executive will manage and guide the development of long-term sustainability strategies, ensuring their successful implementation across multiple disciplines. They will work closely with senior university leadership to create and refine sustainability policies that support the institution’s goals while promoting environmental and social responsibility. Additionally, this role will provide guidance to departments and teams, ensuring that sustainability objectives are integrated into day-to-day operations, driving continuous improvement in environmental performance and resource management. In this position, the Associate General Executive will have oversight of a team of directors and managers dedicated to sustainability efforts. They will be accountable for ensuring the effective execution of goals and objectives across various sustainability-related projects and initiatives. The role requires a forward-thinking approach, fostering collaboration among university units and external stakeholders to address sustainability challenges while promoting operational efficiency. Through this leadership, the Associate Executive will contribute to the university’s long-term vision of creating a sustainable, resilient, and responsible campus community, with a far-reaching impact on Virginia Tech’s success and development.
