Environmental Health and Safety identifies and assesses risks to the health and safety of people in the workplace and the community. Recommends, develops, and administers effective programs to protect occupational health, environmental health, and physical assets of the university. Safely manages hazardous materials, radiation, and biosafety, and minimizes the impact of university operations on natural resources and public health.

Position Summary

The Senior Clinical position within Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Virginia Tech plays a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of individuals within the university community. This position is responsible for identifying and assessing environmental health and safety risks, particularly within clinical and research settings, and implementing strategies to minimize these risks. The Senior Clinical professional will develop, manage, and evaluate comprehensive programs to address occupational health, hazardous materials management, radiation safety, and biosafety. In doing so, they will work to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, fostering a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. In this role, the Senior Clinical professional will be expected to independently manage complex safety and health issues, providing guidance and consultation to faculty, staff, and research teams. They will lead efforts to identify hazards, analyze potential impacts, and recommend effective preventive measures. The Senior Clinical will also develop and administer training programs, conduct risk assessments, and ensure that emergency response protocols are in place to address potential health and safety incidents. This position requires strong expertise in environmental health and safety practices, as well as the ability to influence the culture of safety across campus, particularly in clinical and research environments. As an individual contributor, the Senior Clinical will provide leadership on EHS issues within specific domains, acting as the primary authority for clinical health and safety concerns. They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to create innovative solutions for reducing the university’s environmental footprint and ensuring that safety protocols are consistently followed. This role will require a proactive approach to problem-solving, continuous monitoring of emerging risks, and an ability to communicate complex health and safety information effectively across diverse audiences. The Senior Clinical will also mentor junior staff and help shape the strategic direction of environmental health and safety initiatives at Virginia Tech.
