General Supervisor, Facilities Management

Facilities Management is responsible for coordinating multiple disciplines to ensure optimal operation and maintenance of the buildings, grounds, and facilities of the institution. Responsibilities typically span across construction, remodeling, renovation, and maintenance. Duties may require the incumbent to estimate cost of projects, write contracts, negotiate, and secure bids from contractors, and determine labor, materials, and equipment needed to complete projects.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The General Supervisor within Engineering Services at Virginia Tech plays a crucial role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Facilities Management team, ensuring that all activities related to the maintenance and operation of the university's buildings, grounds, and infrastructure are carried out effectively and efficiently. This position involves coordinating the work of technical, administrative, and operative staff, ensuring the team meets both short-term and long-term objectives related to construction, remodeling, renovation, and general facility maintenance. The General Supervisor is responsible for managing schedules and workflows, ensuring that team members are properly oriented and trained, and that projects are completed on time and within budget. They are also tasked with ensuring that all work complies with safety regulations and quality standards. This role requires strong leadership, as the supervisor is responsible for overseeing the performance and productivity of the team, addressing any issues or challenges that arise, and ensuring that goals and objectives are achieved. In addition to operational oversight, the General Supervisor is involved in the procurement process, which may include estimating project costs, writing contracts, negotiating with contractors, and securing bids for services and materials. They are also responsible for managing resources such as labor, materials, and equipment to ensure efficient completion of projects. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and administrative oversight to effectively manage the work of others while ensuring the university's physical environment is safe, functional, and well-maintained. The General Supervisor contributes directly to the operational success of Facilities Management by ensuring that all tasks are coordinated and executed in alignment with the broader goals of Campus Operations.
