Position Summary

The Senior General Consultant within Emergency Management at Virginia Tech is an expert-level position that plays a vital role in enhancing the university’s emergency management capabilities. This position involves providing strategic guidance and specialized consultation in areas related to emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. The Senior General Consultant works closely with university leadership, public safety teams, and external partners to improve the institution's ability to plan for, respond to, and recover from natural and human-made disasters. The consultant will offer expert advice on the development of comprehensive emergency plans, ensuring alignment with the university’s overall safety objectives. In this role, the consultant will assess the university's vulnerability to various threats, including conducting risk assessments and advising on strategies to reduce those risks. The Senior General Consultant will also assist in the design and implementation of training programs and response exercises, helping to ensure the readiness of the Virginia Tech community for emergencies. As a subject matter expert, the consultant will provide recommendations on policies, procedures, and best practices for emergency management, influencing decision-making at the senior leadership level and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Senior General Consultant is expected to work autonomously, taking the lead on university-wide emergency management initiatives, and contributing directly to the development and execution of strategies that impact the entire university. This role demands a high level of expertise in emergency management, including a deep understanding of current best practices and emerging trends in the field. The consultant will also maintain a focus on ensuring business continuity and minimizing disruptions to the university’s operations during times of crisis. Through their advanced knowledge and leadership, the Senior General Consultant will be responsible for supporting the ongoing development of the university's emergency management framework, ensuring it is robust, flexible, and capable of addressing a wide range of potential incidents or emergencies. The position has a significant impact on the safety and resilience of the Virginia Tech community, directly contributing to the university's ability to navigate and recover from critical events.
