General Consultant, Public Safety

Position Summary

The General Consultant within Public Safety at Virginia Tech is a highly experienced and specialized professional responsible for advising and supporting the development of comprehensive emergency management and business continuity strategies. In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, this position plays a key role in enhancing the university's preparedness for natural and human-made disasters, including identifying points of threat and vulnerability. The General Consultant will work closely with various campus departments, local agencies, and emergency response teams to develop, implement, and continually improve the university’s emergency management plans, policies, and protocols. In this role, the General Consultant will independently conduct risk assessments, provide expert recommendations on mitigating safety threats, and ensure that all disaster response and recovery strategies are effective and actionable. They will develop and deliver training sessions for university staff, faculty, and students, ensuring that all stakeholders understand their roles and responsibilities during an emergency. The consultant will also assist with the preparation of resources, infrastructure, and logistics to ensure efficient response in case of emergencies, and will continuously evaluate and update the university's emergency preparedness programs to reflect best practices and evolving risks. As an individual contributor, the General Consultant will act as the authority on emergency management planning, offering strategic guidance and leadership on complex safety and public safety issues. They will have a critical role in mentoring staff, fostering collaboration among campus safety and security teams, and providing expert advice on the latest developments in emergency management, risk reduction, and recovery strategies. The position requires a deep understanding of public safety protocols and the ability to think strategically, ensuring that the university is prepared to respond effectively to any crisis while safeguarding the well-being of the campus community.
