Content Development facilitates the development of informative, engaging and strategy-based content across teams, using a combination of creative skills and strategic thinking with the goal of driving engagement with audiences in alignment with the universitys brand and organizational objectives.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The General Director of Content Development will lead and oversee the strategic direction and execution of content creation for the university’s communications and marketing efforts. This position is responsible for ensuring that all content development initiatives align with Virginia Tech’s brand, mission, and goals. The Director will manage a team of content creators, strategists, and specialists who are tasked with producing engaging, high-quality content for a range of platforms, including digital media, publications, and social media, to strengthen the university's presence and foster engagement with diverse audiences such as prospective students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community. In this leadership role, the General Director will drive the content strategy in collaboration with other university leaders to ensure a cohesive narrative that supports key institutional initiatives and fosters positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The Director will be accountable for overseeing the development and distribution of content across multiple channels, guiding the creative vision, and aligning the content efforts with the university's overarching goals. Additionally, the Director will manage budgets, allocate resources effectively, and ensure the department’s activities are conducted in line with established policies and strategies while fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. The General Director will be responsible for measuring the impact of content strategies through data analytics and performance metrics to ensure that content resonates with audiences and achieves desired outcomes, such as increasing engagement, driving traffic, and enhancing the university’s reputation. This role will involve setting long-term goals, managing staffing and professional development for the content team, and working closely with senior executives to ensure content strategies are aligned with university-wide initiatives. The Director will also be a key advisor in shaping the institution's messaging, positioning, and storytelling to further Virginia Tech's mission and vision across diverse communication channels.
