Communications is responsible for communications strategy and management. Partners with colleges and business units to provide creative solutions and consultation in the effective execution of communications initiatives for stakeholders including current and potential students, employees, media and others.

Position Summary

The Senior General Consultant within Communications at Virginia Tech is an expert-level position responsible for driving high-level communication strategies and initiatives across the university. The consultant will provide advanced consultation and creative solutions to colleges, business units, and various stakeholders in the development and execution of effective communications programs aimed at students, alumni, employees, and media. This role requires the ability to shape and manage communications strategies that align with university goals, leveraging expertise to guide the university’s messaging and outreach. As an individual contributor at an expert level, the Senior General Consultant operates with a high degree of autonomy and serves as a subject matter expert, ensuring the execution of complex, university-wide communications initiatives. The consultant will take on leadership roles, mentoring less experienced team members and overseeing the development of best practices for communication efforts. Additionally, this position influences strategic decisions at the highest level, contributing to the university’s overall communications framework and playing a key role in its public relations and marketing success. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of communication strategy, as well as the ability to lead complex initiatives, collaborate with internal and external partners, and manage projects with significant impact on the university’s reputation and outreach. The Senior General Consultant’s work will have a direct, long-term influence on the university’s communications and marketing efforts across multiple audiences and media platforms.
