Communications is responsible for communications strategy and management. Partners with colleges and business units to provide creative solutions and consultation in the effective execution of communications initiatives for stakeholders including current and potential students, employees, media and others.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The General Supervisor within Communications at Virginia Tech is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and workflow of a team focused on executing the university’s communications initiatives. This role requires the supervisor to manage and direct the work of administrative, operative, and/or technical staff members. The supervisor ensures the completion of assigned tasks, coordinates schedules, and provides guidance and support to team members to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality output. As part of their responsibilities, the General Supervisor will also ensure that team members are properly trained and oriented to their roles, helping to develop their skills and knowledge within the communications field. The supervisor plays a key role in maintaining smooth operations by providing ongoing coaching, conducting performance evaluations, and managing any personnel-related issues that may arise. Additionally, the General Supervisor is accountable for the achievement of both short-term and long-term goals for the communications team, ensuring that the unit's efforts align with the broader communications and marketing strategy of the university. This position requires strong leadership and organizational skills, with the supervisor being responsible for both day-to-day oversight and the strategic management of a team. The General Supervisor will collaborate with other departments within the university to help shape and refine communications strategies that effectively reach a variety of stakeholders, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the media. The work of the supervisor contributes directly to the overall success of communications initiatives across Virginia Tech.
