General Supervisor, Digitization

Digitization is responsible for digitization of collections in a wide range of formats. Enables appropriate management and stewardship of digital objects to promote accessibility that meet continually evolving standards and specifications for imaging and related metadata creation. May include contributions to overall digitization strategy and policies.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The General Supervisor within Digitization plays a key leadership role in overseeing the daily operations of digitization activities that support Library Services' mission to enhance academic teaching, learning, and research. This position is responsible for managing a team engaged in the digitization of library collections across various formats, ensuring that digital objects meet evolving standards for quality, accessibility, and metadata creation. By directing digitization workflows and contributing to the stewardship of digital assets, the General Supervisor helps expand access to the library’s collections and supports long-term digital preservation initiatives. In this supervisory capacity, the General Supervisor coordinates team schedules, assigns tasks, and ensures that project goals and deadlines are met. The role manages quality control processes, monitors equipment and software needs, and may liaise with other departments to support broader digitization strategies. Responsibilities also include training and orienting new employees, providing ongoing guidance, and maintaining high standards for productivity and accuracy across digitization projects. The supervisor may also contribute to the refinement of procedures and policies to improve operational efficiency and align with best practices in digital imaging and metadata management. As a Level 1 Manager in General Administration, the General Supervisor provides direct oversight of administrative and technical staff, ensuring performance through regular evaluations, coaching, and clear goal-setting. The role carries out core managerial functions, including participation in hiring decisions, addressing performance concerns, and supporting the professional development of team members. Through hands-on leadership and an understanding of digitization technologies and workflows, this position plays an essential role in maintaining high-quality digital outputs that serve the academic community and preserve the institution’s collections for future use.
