Career Advising
Career Advising plans, develops and implements programs, activities and services to foster career development. Educates students in self-reflection and in identifying their options for majors and careers, and to communicate skills and interests through written methods (resumes, cover letters, social media) and interpersonally (interviewing and networking). Assists in planning career events, mentoring programs or other opportunities for students to undertake learning experiences such as internships, projects or research opportunities.

Position Summary

The Academic Consultant within Career Advising is a highly specialized role that requires advanced expertise in career development, student advising, and program management. The consultant offers one-on-one advising on various topics such as career exploration, resume building, interview preparation, and networking. They also play a key role in assessing students' academic and professional interests, assisting them in selecting the appropriate academic courses, major, and internships to align with their career aspirations. Beyond direct student advising, the Academic Consultant within Career Advising takes a leadership role in developing and implementing high-impact career services programs. They collaborate with faculty, employers, and external partners to create opportunities that enhance student employability, such as internship placements, career fairs, professional development workshops, and mentorship programs. The consultant evaluates the effectiveness of these initiatives, making recommendations for improvements, and ensuring that all programs are aligned with student needs and institutional goals. They also provide valuable insights on market trends and emerging career fields, helping students to position themselves competitively in the workforce. As an advanced-level individual contributor, the Academic Consultant within Career Advising is expected to demonstrate independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. They provide mentorship to junior staff and may oversee the development and execution of specialized career-related projects. Additionally, they are responsible for providing strategic recommendations to senior leadership within student services, ensuring that the career advising function continuously adapts to the evolving needs of students and the job market. The position requires a deep understanding of career counseling, academic advising, and the broader landscape of higher education, and it involves significant leadership and collaboration to maximize student success.
