Career Advising
Career Advising plans, develops and implements programs, activities and services to foster career development. Educates students in self-reflection and in identifying their options for majors and careers, and to communicate skills and interests through written methods (resumes, cover letters, social media) and interpersonally (interviewing and networking). Assists in planning career events, mentoring programs or other opportunities for students to undertake learning experiences such as internships, projects or research opportunities.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The Academic Supervisor within Career Advising plays a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the career services team, ensuring that career development programs, services, and resources are effectively executed. This position involves supervising a team of career advisors and support staff, coordinating schedules, and managing the workflow to ensure timely and high-quality service delivery. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that team members receive proper orientation, training, and ongoing professional development to enhance their ability to assist students in achieving academic and career success. In addition to overseeing team operations, the Academic Supervisor within Career Advising is responsible for ensuring that the department’s career advising services align with the overall goals of student services. This includes planning and implementing initiatives that provide students with the necessary resources for career exploration, resume building, interview preparation, networking, and job placement. The supervisor collaborates with academic advisors, faculty, and employers to identify opportunities for internships, mentorships, and other career development experiences. They also monitor the effectiveness of these programs and suggest improvements to optimize the career advising process for students. The Academic Supervisor in Career Advising is accountable for performance management and productivity within the team. This includes conducting regular performance evaluations, making recommendations for hiring, and handling disciplinary actions when necessary. The supervisor sets both short- and long-term goals for the team, ensuring that career advising initiatives are successfully implemented and that students receive the support they need to succeed in their academic and professional endeavors. Additionally, the supervisor maintains open communication with senior leadership within student services to report on progress and provide insights into emerging trends in career development.
