Career Advising
Career Advising plans, develops and implements programs, activities and services to foster career development. Educates students in self-reflection and in identifying their options for majors and careers, and to communicate skills and interests through written methods (resumes, cover letters, social media) and interpersonally (interviewing and networking). Assists in planning career events, mentoring programs or other opportunities for students to undertake learning experiences such as internships, projects or research opportunities.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The Academic Director for Career Advising provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight for career development programs and services that support student success across the university. This role is grounded in the mission of Student Services and Student Advising, focusing on empowering students to explore academic and professional pathways, build employability skills, and successfully transition from college to career. The director ensures the effective design and delivery of inclusive, evidence-based career development strategies that enhance students’ personal, academic, and professional growth. In this leadership capacity, the Academic Director oversees a comprehensive portfolio of career advising functions, including career counseling, internship coordination, employer engagement, and skill-building workshops. The director supervises a team of advising professionals and career specialists, manages operational and personnel matters, and develops metrics to assess program effectiveness. This position is responsible for planning and allocating the unit’s budget and resources, driving innovation in advising practices, and maintaining alignment with institutional goals and national best practices. Operating within the Academic Administration track at the Director (M3) level, this position has a broad university impact and collaborates with academic departments, student services units, and external partners to develop career pathways and experiential learning opportunities for students. The director contributes to institutional planning efforts and helps shape strategic initiatives related to workforce readiness, alumni outcomes, and student retention. Through leadership and partnership, the Academic Director for Career Advising ensures students are prepared to thrive in a dynamic global workforce.
