Principal Gifts identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward principal gifts from donors with the institutions highest profile, inclination, and capacity. Designs and implements strategic fundraising plans through collaboration for academic units, regional campuses, and complex markets. Typically manages a portfolio of approximately 30 prospects and gift solicitations greater than $5,000,000.

They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The Development Supervisor for Principal Gifts oversees a team responsible for cultivating relationships with the university’s most prominent donors and securing transformational gifts exceeding $5,000,000. This role combines strategic fundraising expertise with team leadership to ensure effective engagement with high-profile prospects. The supervisor collaborates with university leadership, academic units, and regional campuses to design and implement comprehensive fundraising plans tailored to donors’ interests and the institution’s priorities. In addition to managing a select portfolio of principal gift prospects, the supervisor is accountable for the orientation, training, and performance of their team. They coordinate workflows, set team goals, and ensure the successful execution of fundraising activities that advance the university’s mission. By providing day-to-day oversight and fostering a culture of excellence, the Development Supervisor for Principal Gifts plays a critical role in achieving sustainable philanthropic growth and strengthening the university’s capacity to deliver on its strategic vision.
