Types of projects include energy use reduction, energy cost savings, waste management, recycling, building improvements and enhancements.

Position Summary

The General Director of Sustainability at Virginia Tech is responsible for overseeing and guiding the university's sustainability programs and initiatives, ensuring that they align with the institution's strategic goals and support long-term environmental, economic, and social objectives. This position directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of sustainability projects across campus, focusing on energy reduction, cost savings, waste management, recycling, and building improvements. The director will lead a team of professionals, coordinating resources to achieve measurable outcomes in sustainability efforts while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The General Director will have full responsibility for managing the sustainability department's planning, staffing, and budgeting, ensuring that sustainability initiatives are appropriately resourced and meet the university's sustainability targets. The director will work closely with senior leadership to set and align strategic sustainability goals with broader campus operations and academic objectives, guiding the implementation of projects that advance the university’s commitment to sustainability. The role will require the director to manage the overall direction of sustainability projects, ensuring they are effectively integrated across various university departments and functions. Additionally, the General Director will be responsible for evaluating and assessing the performance of sustainability initiatives, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing strategies to enhance the university's sustainability outcomes. They will also be a key point of contact for university leadership and external stakeholders, advocating for sustainability best practices and ensuring that the university's sustainability goals are well communicated and supported at all levels. The General Director will play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainability at Virginia Tech, influencing campus development and operations to ensure a sustainable and resilient campus environment for years to come.
