Engineering Services provides technical support for mechanical and electrical building and infrastructure systems and equipment. May design mechanical and electrical engineering systems, size and specify equipment, prepare engineering calculations and studies, create design documents, and certify them for construction.
Executive
Executive: The positions work is achieved through the strategic direction of the organization as a whole. Executives have direct accountability for setting strategic goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of a senior management area or other business unit with a universitywide scope of impact. These positions contribute to the highest-level panels and teams. The decisions made under the purview of the executive positions duties must routinely have direct impact on success across the university and impact the overall development of the university. Executive positions are reflected in the E1-E3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Associate Executive: Accountable for annual execution of goals and objectives in area of responsibility; disseminates goals to direct reports and ensures goals are operationalized. Recommends and may approve policy for area of operational and/or functional control. Typically has multiple directors and managers as direct reports. Scope of responsibility is a university wide sub-function with multiple disciplines, or multiple functions within a college or business unit.

Position Summary

The Associate Technical Executive within Engineering Services at Virginia Tech is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operational execution of technical support for mechanical and electrical building and infrastructure systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that the university's engineering systems and equipment are designed, maintained, and operated efficiently, with a focus on mechanical and electrical engineering systems. The Associate Technical Executive works closely with senior leadership to set and align strategic goals for the engineering services department, ensuring that engineering support meets the needs of the university's facilities. The position involves directing a team of engineers and technical staff, providing guidance and leadership while ensuring the department meets performance objectives. This includes overseeing the design of mechanical and electrical systems, equipment sizing, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Additionally, the Associate Technical Executive will manage the creation of engineering calculations, studies, and design documents, ensuring these are certified for construction and align with institutional goals and standards. The role also includes responsibility for the annual execution of goals and objectives within the engineering services function, with a focus on operational efficiency and continuous improvement. The Associate Technical Executive is involved in recommending and approving policies within their scope of responsibility and will typically manage multiple directors and managers within the department. This position requires close collaboration with other departments and executive leadership, ensuring that engineering initiatives contribute to the long-term success of the university's facilities and infrastructure.
