Engineering Services provides technical support for mechanical and electrical building and infrastructure systems and equipment. May design mechanical and electrical engineering systems, size and specify equipment, prepare engineering calculations and studies, create design documents, and certify them for construction.

Position Summary

The Technical Director within Engineering Services at Virginia Tech is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operations of the university’s engineering services. This role includes managing the technical support for mechanical and electrical building systems, infrastructure, and equipment across the university’s facilities. The Technical Director provides leadership and expertise in designing, sizing, and specifying mechanical and electrical engineering systems, as well as preparing engineering calculations and studies. This position plays a key role in ensuring that all systems and infrastructure projects meet university standards and regulatory requirements, and are certified for construction. As the head of engineering services, the Technical Director is responsible for directing multiple teams and units, ensuring that they operate effectively and efficiently. This includes overseeing the planning, staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation for engineering projects across the university. The Director collaborates closely with executive leadership to establish and implement strategic goals and initiatives for the department. Additionally, they guide and mentor senior engineers and staff, ensuring the continuous development of technical expertise within the team. The Technical Director also plays a pivotal role in the maintenance and optimization of the university’s physical infrastructure, working across departments to ensure that the engineering services provided align with broader campus operations. The position is focused on achieving operational excellence, enhancing the university's facilities, and contributing to the safety, sustainability, and long-term growth of Virginia Tech’s campus environment.
