Police is directly responsible for coordinating the activities and administration of the university police force.
Executive
Executive: The positions work is achieved through the strategic direction of the organization as a whole. Executives have direct accountability for setting strategic goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of a senior management area or other business unit with a universitywide scope of impact. These positions contribute to the highest-level panels and teams. The decisions made under the purview of the executive positions duties must routinely have direct impact on success across the university and impact the overall development of the university. Executive positions are reflected in the E1-E3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 1
Associate Executive: Accountable for annual execution of goals and objectives in area of responsibility; disseminates goals to direct reports and ensures goals are operationalized. Recommends and may approve policy for area of operational and/or functional control. Typically has multiple directors and managers as direct reports. Scope of responsibility is a university wide sub-function with multiple disciplines, or multiple functions within a college or business unit.

Position Summary

The Associate General Executive within the Police department at Virginia Tech is a senior executive position responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operational execution of the university’s police force. This role involves managing the administration, coordination, and daily operations of the police department, ensuring that the university's law enforcement efforts are aligned with the institution's broader goals of safety, security, and public service. The Associate Executive is accountable for setting and achieving annual goals for the police department, working to ensure the implementation of policies and initiatives that enhance the overall safety and security of the campus community. In this capacity, the Associate General Executive collaborates closely with other university leaders, such as those within Campus Operations, Public Safety, and Emergency Management, to identify and address security risks and vulnerabilities. The role involves the development and execution of strategies that support the university's emergency response plans and business continuity efforts, ensuring that the police department contributes effectively to mitigating threats and responding to emergencies. This executive position is also responsible for the allocation of resources within the police department, including staffing, training, and budgeting, to ensure the department is adequately equipped and staffed to handle its duties. The Associate General Executive plays a crucial role in providing leadership to the department, overseeing multiple directors and managers, and ensuring that operational goals are clearly communicated and operationalized. This includes formulating policies, providing guidance on law enforcement matters, and making high-level decisions that impact both the police force and the university community. Additionally, the position requires a focus on fostering collaboration between internal and external stakeholders, such as local law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and university departments, to ensure a comprehensive approach to campus safety. This position requires strong leadership and expertise in law enforcement, with the ability to make critical decisions that have a university-wide impact. The Associate General Executive will also be expected to contribute to the university’s strategic planning processes and represent the police department at the highest levels of the organization, ensuring that the department’s priorities and needs are integrated into the overall objectives of the university.
