Data Management is responsible for the practice of collecting, keeping, and using data securely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. The goal of data management is to help faculty, staff, students, and the university optimize the use of data within the bounds of policy and regulation.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.
Level 3
Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The Technical Director within Data Management provides strategic and operational leadership for the university’s data management initiatives, ensuring that institutional data is collected, stored, secured, and utilized effectively to support academic, administrative, and research objectives. This role operates at the intersection of information technology and data governance, overseeing a range of data-related functions including data architecture, quality assurance, compliance, and lifecycle management. The Director plays a key role in defining and executing strategies that optimize data accessibility and integrity across systems while aligning with institutional policies and regulatory requirements. In this leadership position, the Director manages multiple teams responsible for developing and maintaining data infrastructures and platforms that support reporting, analytics, and operational processes. They work collaboratively with IT, academic, and administrative leaders to implement scalable and secure data solutions, transition from legacy systems, and support modernization efforts. The Director leads efforts in establishing and enforcing data standards, policies, and procedures, while also championing the use of emerging technologies to improve the university’s data capabilities and enhance decision-making across departments. The Technical Director is accountable for long-term planning, resource management, and budget oversight for the data management function. They ensure that staffing, training, and technology investments align with the university’s strategic goals. As a senior leader, the Director collaborates with executive leadership to shape institutional data strategies, foster a culture of data stewardship, and drive innovation through data. Their efforts directly impact the university’s ability to leverage data as a strategic asset and maintain compliance, operational efficiency, and academic excellence.
