Patent and Licensing regulates, promotes and protects the use of the universitys name and identifying marks, both on and off campus. Protects and licenses the university name and identifying marks on commercial products and services, university promotions, sponsorships, affinity programs, etc. Also includes those positions which advise on, promote, and protect the patents and licenses of university community members.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Position Summary

The General Manager within Patent and Licensing oversees the strategic management and operational effectiveness of the university’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and licensing activities. This role is responsible for ensuring the effective protection, licensing, and commercialization of university-owned patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property assets. The General Manager leads a team focused on identifying, evaluating, and exploiting IP opportunities, aligning the institution’s IP strategy with its research, business development, and commercialization goals, while adhering to legal and regulatory compliance. In addition to managing intellectual property assets, the General Manager is accountable for the protection of the university’s name and identifying marks, ensuring proper licensing agreements and overseeing the use of the university’s trademarks on products, services, and various commercial ventures. This includes supervising licensing arrangements with external companies, managing contracts, and promoting university innovations through collaborations, sponsorships, and affinity programs. The General Manager will also ensure that the university’s IP is effectively used to build strategic partnerships and maximize revenue while safeguarding the reputation of the institution. As a manager, the General Manager within Patent and Licensing leads a team of professionals and support staff, ensuring high-performance standards and goal achievement across the department. This position is responsible for setting department objectives, implementing strategic plans, and ensuring alignment with broader institutional goals. The General Manager is also involved in hiring decisions, conducting evaluations, and providing ongoing leadership and mentorship to staff. The role requires strong leadership skills, an in-depth understanding of patent and licensing regulations, and the ability to manage resources effectively to deliver successful outcomes in both the protection and commercialization of intellectual property.
