Patent and Licensing regulates, promotes and protects the use of the universitys name and identifying marks, both on and off campus. Protects and licenses the university name and identifying marks on commercial products and services, university promotions, sponsorships, affinity programs, etc. Also includes those positions which advise on, promote, and protect the patents and licenses of university community members.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Position Summary

The General Director within Patent and Licensing holds a senior leadership position responsible for the overall strategy, management, and operation of the university’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio. This role encompasses overseeing the protection, commercialization, and licensing of patents, trademarks, and other IP assets. The General Director ensures that the university’s intellectual property is managed effectively and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, while aligning IP strategies with the institution’s broader academic, research, and commercialization goals. This position requires a deep understanding of IP law, licensing agreements, and the commercialization process, as well as a proven ability to influence university-wide decisions and initiatives. The General Director is responsible for the university's strategic direction regarding its patents, trademarks, and licensing activities, including the use of the university’s name and identifying marks both on and off-campus. The role involves promoting and protecting these assets by negotiating licensing agreements, managing partnerships, and exploring new commercial opportunities. The General Director also ensures the university’s trademarks are properly utilized on commercial products, services, sponsorships, and affinity programs, thus contributing to the university’s revenue generation and reputation management. Additionally, the position provides high-level consultation and advice to university leadership and departments on IP-related matters. As a director, the General Director leads a cross-functional team responsible for the university’s patent and licensing activities. This includes managing budgets, staffing, and resource allocation to ensure that strategic goals are achieved. The General Director collaborates closely with executive leadership to set and implement long-term strategic objectives for the IP function. Additionally, the General Director has accountability for hiring decisions, staff development, performance evaluations, and fostering a culture of compliance and innovation within the team. This role requires exceptional leadership skills, a strategic mindset, and the ability to drive initiatives that enhance the university’s IP portfolio and its impact on the institution’s growth and success.
