Enables appropriate management and stewardship of archival collections. Sets and administers policy to allow campus and public access to archival materials.

Position Summary

The General Manager within Archives is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and strategic direction of the archival department, ensuring the proper stewardship and preservation of archival materials, both physical and digital. This role includes managing a team of archivists and support staff, providing leadership, training, and development to ensure the department functions efficiently and in accordance with best practices in archival management. The General Manager is tasked with implementing policies that govern the acquisition, description, organization, and accessibility of records, while ensuring that materials are preserved for future generations in compliance with legal and institutional standards. In this managerial capacity, the General Manager is responsible for setting and executing departmental goals aligned with the overall mission of Library Services. This includes overseeing the development and implementation of processes for acquiring, managing, and preserving both permanent records and historically valuable materials. The General Manager is also tasked with the management of resources, ensuring that the team has the tools and infrastructure needed to maintain the archives effectively. Additionally, they will oversee budgetary matters, such as allocating funds for preservation, digitization, and staffing, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and within the department’s fiscal guidelines. The General Manager plays a critical role in fostering collaboration across departments, particularly with Library Services and other university units, to ensure that archival materials are accessible to students, faculty, and the public. This involves coordinating access to records for research, teaching, and public purposes, while also maintaining a balance between access and preservation. The role requires strong leadership skills to ensure the productivity and performance of the team, as well as the ability to navigate complex challenges in archival management. The General Manager will also be expected to contribute to long-term strategic planning, identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation in archival processes and accessibility.
