General Director, Advancement

Develops and administers processes to support alumni relations, annual and major giving, and stewardship. Participates in the management and execution of activities to advance donor fundraising potential.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The General Director in Advancement provides strategic leadership for multiple units or teams engaged in alumni relations, annual and major giving, and stewardship efforts, ensuring alignment with university-wide goals. This role oversees the development and administration of advancement processes that enhance donor engagement and fundraising success, while fostering long-term relationships with key stakeholders. The director is responsible for high-level planning, staffing, and budgeting to ensure operational excellence and impactful outcomes across the advancement function. As a Level 3 Director, this position has a significant university-wide impact, managing multiple units and collaborating with executive leadership to establish and implement strategic objectives. While maintaining oversight of team performance and productivity, the General Director also leads initiatives to drive innovation and effectiveness in advancement programs. This role demands a visionary leader with a proven ability to manage complex operations, build consensus, and deliver results that support the university’s mission and long-term growth.
