Facilities Management is responsible for coordinating multiple disciplines to ensure optimal operation and maintenance of the buildings, grounds, and facilities of the institution. Responsibilities typically span across construction, remodeling, renovation, and maintenance. Duties may require the incumbent to estimate cost of projects, write contracts, negotiate, and secure bids from contractors, and determine labor, materials, and equipment needed to complete projects.

They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Position Summary

The Technical Supervisor within Facilities Management at Virginia Tech plays a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of technical teams responsible for maintaining and optimizing the university's buildings, grounds, and infrastructure. This position requires strong leadership skills to supervise and coordinate experienced technical staff, ensuring that facilities-related tasks are completed efficiently, on time, and in accordance with safety and quality standards. In this role, the Technical Supervisor manages team schedules, prioritizes work orders, and ensures that workflows are coordinated to meet project and maintenance deadlines. The supervisor is responsible for delegating tasks, providing technical guidance, and ensuring that team members are adequately trained and equipped to perform their duties. This includes overseeing both routine and complex maintenance activities, construction projects, and any necessary repairs to the university’s physical spaces. The Technical Supervisor also ensures the proper allocation of resources, including labor, materials, and equipment, and monitors the completion of tasks within specified budgets and timelines. The role requires a hands-on approach in guiding the team and resolving technical issues, while also ensuring that safety regulations and university policies are strictly adhered to. Additionally, the supervisor plays an essential role in ensuring that team members are well-trained and oriented, helping foster a culture of continuous improvement and skill development within the team. This may include performance evaluations, recommending training programs, and providing feedback to staff to improve their productivity and technical expertise. The Technical Supervisor contributes to the overall strategic goals of Facilities Management by ensuring that maintenance and repair work is efficiently coordinated and executed, ultimately supporting a well-maintained campus environment. The position requires effective communication with other departments, project teams, and senior management to provide updates and address any facility-related concerns or needs.
