Communications is responsible for communications strategy and management. Partners with colleges and business units to provide creative solutions and consultation in the effective execution of communications initiatives for stakeholders including current and potential students, employees, media and others.

Position Summary

The General Consultant within Communications at Virginia Tech serves as a key contributor to the development and execution of communication strategies, playing an essential role in managing complex communications initiatives across multiple university stakeholders. This position provides expert-level consultation to colleges, business units, and other departments to ensure the alignment of messaging with university goals. The consultant will work with a broad range of audiences, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and media, helping to shape the university’s communication efforts effectively. As an individual contributor at an advanced level, the General Consultant operates with a high degree of independence, requiring significant expertise and experience in the field. This role involves taking on leadership responsibilities in coordinating complex projects and initiatives, offering guidance to less experienced team members, and ensuring that all communication efforts are implemented successfully and on time. The consultant will be expected to provide mentorship, make high-level decisions, and influence communication strategies that have a significant impact on the university’s reputation and outreach. The position requires a deep understanding of communication principles and strategies, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The General Consultant will ensure that the communications strategies developed are creative, effective, and aligned with the university’s overall goals and objectives.
