General Supervisor, Media Relations

Media Relations
Media Relations focuses on communication with the media and the general public to protect and promote the reputation of the university, including active issue management. Creates and distributes public communications such as media releases, speeches, newsletters, and social media. May prepare leaders for media interviews and responds to inquiries from the public, the press, and other stakeholders.
Management / Leadership
Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Supervisor: Supervises experienced administrative, operative, and/or technical roles. Coordinates schedules and workflow for the team. Focuses on team completion of assignments and is responsible for ensuring the orientation and training of employees.

Position Summary

The General Supervisor within Media Relations at Virginia Tech is responsible for overseeing a team of media relations professionals, ensuring that communication strategies and public relations efforts are carried out effectively and efficiently. This role involves coordinating daily workflows, schedules, and assignments, ensuring that all media outreach, press releases, and public communication materials are produced in a timely manner. The supervisor is responsible for managing team members, providing orientation and training to new staff, and offering guidance to ensure that media relations goals align with the university’s overall communications strategy. The General Supervisor also plays a critical role in fostering a collaborative environment where the team can successfully manage media inquiries, handle active issue management, and respond to the public and press. Additionally, the supervisor will be tasked with monitoring the performance and productivity of team members, conducting evaluations, and recommending actions related to hiring, termination, or discipline when necessary. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to ensure that the media relations team consistently meets the demands of the university’s communications strategy while also promoting a positive reputation in the media and public.
