Information Technology is responsible for the use of any computers, software applications, storage, networking, and other hardware or physical devices. Develops and maintains infrastructures and processes for creating, managing, securing, and exchanging all forms of electronic data. Incorporates leading-edge techniques for collaboratively enhancing the performance of installed systems, identifying new technologies, developing applications, and transitioning from legacy to new systems.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The Technical Director within Information Technology plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the strategic direction and operational management of the IT function across the organization. This position is responsible for directing and controlling the activities of multiple IT teams or units, ensuring that technology infrastructure, applications, and services align with the organization’s goals and objectives. The Technical Director provides oversight on the development, implementation, and optimization of IT systems, ensuring that they support key business operations while driving innovation and maintaining security. They also lead the transition from legacy systems to modern solutions, incorporating cutting-edge technologies to enhance overall system performance. In this director-level role, the Technical Director is responsible for the planning, staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation across IT teams. They work closely with senior leadership to establish strategic goals and priorities for the IT function, ensuring that resources are effectively deployed to meet organizational needs. The Technical Director is accountable for the overall performance of IT operations, coordinating multiple teams, and ensuring seamless collaboration between various technical departments. This position also involves monitoring the progress of large-scale projects, evaluating risks, and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget. The Technical Director serves as a key partner to executive leadership, contributing to the creation and execution of long-term strategies for technology initiatives. They provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to IT managers and staff, helping to build high-performing teams and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The role also includes making critical decisions on technology adoption and ensuring that IT systems are scalable, secure, and able to meet future demands. By managing a complex and dynamic IT environment, the Technical Director ensures that the organization’s technology infrastructure supports its ongoing growth, operational efficiency, and overall strategic goals.
