Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The General Director within Library Services is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, planning, and operations of the library’s services, collections, and systems across the university. This role involves managing multiple units within the library and ensuring that all aspects of library operations, from access and organization of collections to specialized information systems, align with the university’s academic goals and objectives. The General Director works closely with executive leadership to set and implement long-term strategic goals for library services, ensuring they enhance academic teaching, learning, and research. As the primary leader of the library services division, the General Director is accountable for overseeing budgets, staffing, and resource allocation across various units. They ensure efficient use of resources while maintaining high service standards for students, faculty, and staff. The Director plays a critical role in developing and executing strategies that ensure the library remains innovative, responsive to the evolving needs of the university community, and compliant with industry standards for information management and accessibility. Additionally, the General Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining policies that govern library operations, supporting collaboration between departments, and fostering partnerships with external organizations. The General Director also provides leadership and guidance to senior managers and other key library staff. While managing multiple teams indirectly, they set performance expectations, monitor team outcomes, and ensure alignment with broader institutional goals. The Director plays a significant role in driving organizational growth and change within the library by fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development. This position requires a high level of leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage complex projects and initiatives with broad institutional impact.
