Academic Advising provides advising, planning, and support services to students to ensure their academic, personal and professional success. Advises students concerning an appropriate academic schedule and course selection, choice of major, minor, degree and graduation requirements, interpretation of department, college and university requirements, career exploration, and other related matters.

Manager: The positions work is achieved through the direction of others. Managers have direct accountability for setting goals and using resources. They are responsible for administrative oversight of individuals, including conducting recommendations for hiring and termination, writing evaluations, disciplinary actions, day-to-day oversight as well as long-term goal setting and accountability for the performance and productivity of the employees. Managerial positions are reflected in the M1-M3 career track levels in the management/leadership track.

Director: Directs and controls the activities of multiple university units or leads a team of professionals with significant university wide impact. Typically has indirect reports. In charge of overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, etc. for the unit. Collaborates with executive leadership on establishing strategic goals across the function.

Position Summary

The Academic Director within Academic Advising plays a strategic leadership role in overseeing and directing the academic advising department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality academic support services to students across the institution. This position is responsible for setting the vision and goals for academic advising, aligning the department’s objectives with the broader student services and institutional goals. The director collaborates with academic departments and senior leadership to develop advising strategies that meet the evolving needs of students, with a focus on enhancing academic success, student engagement, and retention. Additionally, the director is tasked with creating and implementing policies and initiatives that ensure academic advising is consistent, accessible, and effective for all students. In this role, the Academic Director leads a team of managers and advisors, providing guidance, training, and mentorship to ensure they are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to effectively support students in their academic journey. The director has oversight of the recruitment, hiring, and professional development of advising staff, ensuring a high level of expertise and service delivery. Additionally, the director evaluates advising performance using data-driven assessments, making recommendations for continuous improvement in services, advising processes, and outcomes. The director is also responsible for managing the department’s budget, ensuring the allocation of resources aligns with strategic priorities and operational needs. The Academic Director serves as a key leader in shaping the academic advising experience at the university, working closely with other departments and leadership teams to integrate advising with other student services, curricular, and co-curricular offerings. The director is instrumental in fostering collaboration across academic advising and other student-facing services, ensuring that advising is an integral part of the student success ecosystem. By working strategically with faculty, staff, and leadership, the Academic Director aims to create a supportive environment where students can thrive academically, explore their career aspirations, and achieve their personal and professional goals.
